Completely Normal

Phoenix Wright, generally speaking, was a fairly normal man. Sure, he was a bit odd in his work as a lawyer, and his days at work were odd as well… But compared to spirit mediums, prosecutors with whips, magicians, and murderers… Well, Phoenix was a bit more normal than they were, right? And the ghost that haunted him didn’t change that. It wasn’t his fault it was there! In fact, since no one else could see it, Phoenix could pretend it wasn’t hovering behind him, and voila, a perfect appearance of normalcy.

The ghost’s name was Doug Swallow. They had known each other back when Doug was alive, but… they hadn’t gotten along too well, to say the least. Strangely enough… they got along better now that Doug was the ghost in his room.

One night, Doug was floating over the wardrobe, looking down at Phoenix from above. Phoenix was sitting at his desk, facing the window where he could catch the light of the moon. Next to his law books, there were a few about something that existed in this world: soulmates. Each person was assigned one at birth, and supposedly, when you met your soulmate, you would just know . Phoenix was certain that his soulmate was Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

Although many times… he wondered why Doug’s spirit had been trapped by his side.

“Working this late?” Doug asked, as if he didn’t know.

“Of course, this case is very important,” Phoenix replied, used to this situation—Doug was kind of like a second voice of consciousness at that point.

“It’s because of that Miles guy, isn’t it? It’s funny that after all these years, you’re still trying to win him over.”

Phoenix frowned, shrinking back a bit.

“I’m not trying to win him over … It’s something much bigger than that. I need to save him.”

Doug fell silent. He moved in place, with words he didn’t say aloud. Words like, ‘I wish you had wanted to save me too.’

“Alright, if you say so. But don’t forget to sleep, okay? You’ll only hurt yourself if you don’t,” Doug said instead.

Hours later, Phoenix fell asleep on his desk. As a ghost, Doug couldn’t ever sleep… Instead he thought, and thought, and thought.

Would it be better if Doug told him, or would it make things worse? Should he wait until Phoenix faced Edgeworth and realized he’s not his soulmate all by himself?

Phoenix loved the concept, and it would be so sad, really, if he realized the ghost chained to him was there because he was his soulmate… and it was way too late for a life together.
